Issues in Fayetteville School Board Election

Early voting begins at the Courthouse on Monday for the Zone 4 Position on the Fayetteville School Board, and polling places for the September 18 election will be open at Trinity United Methodist Church (Garland & Sycamore) and Sequoyah United Methodist Church (1910 N. Old Wire Road). The candidates are Becky Purcell and Mary Lynn Mantooth.

Both candidates have campaign websites, and both have participated enthusiastically in numerous interviews and forums that continue to be cablecast. Both say they would have voted against adding the 9th grade to the Fayetteville High School, and that would have had a significant impact on the future location of the campus.

Becky Purcell has been very clear about her positions. "I believe it is in the best interests of our students to keep FHS in its current location," she says on her website, then she goes into a very detailed and informative discussion of the pros and cons and the reason for her position. I like that in a candidate. It is risky but straightforward to let the voters know what you really think. Too bad that her campaign yard signs suck so badly that it is difficult to even read her name.

Mary Lynn Mantooth has better yard signs and a more attractive website, but she doesn't have much to say. Under the alleged "Issues" link on her website, she just says that the "location and design of new Fayetteville High School building" is an important issue. Boy, I'm glad she cleared that up. Glibness and a flashy advertising campaign might prevail, but that is no substitute for being honest with the voters. This is especially important for a candidate who lives out northwest of the bypass on Wheeler Road near Double Springs.
